In 1963 The Walker Cup was contested with the USA running out the 12-8 winners. The Ailsa hosted several professional events in the 1970’s before finally hosting The Open Championship in 1977 when Tom Watson beat Jack Nicklaus by one shot. In 1986 Greg Norman won The Open at Turnberry and in 1994 Nick Price was victorious. Turnberry’s unique claim that each of its three Open Championships have been won by the best player in the world at the time is testament to the quality of the Ailsa.
The Ailsa has become a regular venue for the Senior British Open hosting it seven times since 1987. Gary Player, Bob Charles and Tom Watson have all won this Senior Major Championship at Turnberry. In 2002 it was the turn of another Major, the Women’s British Open to be staged over the famous links, where one of the favourites, Karrie Webb prevailed as victorious, winning by 2 shots. This Major returns to the Ailsa course in summer 2015.
