Tournaments and Championships
Turnberry, almost since its inception, has hosted tournaments; amateur and professional for men and women, at the highest level. The first professional tournament was staged in 1908 and in 1912 the first of three Ladies British Open Amateur championships held at Turnberry was won by Gladys Ravenscroft.
In 1914, a challenge match took place at Turnberry the day following The Open Championship at Prestwick. Harry Vardon and J.H. Taylor played against James Braid and George Duncan. They were the four best players in the world at that time and between them had won The Open sixteen times. The match was won by Braid and Duncan. Harry Vardon had won his sixth Open title at Prestwick the day before.
During the 1930’s and 1950’s Turnberry was the venue for several amateur and professional championships. In 1961 the great Sir Michael Bonallack won The Amateur Championship over the Ailsa, firmly establishing Turnberry as a leading championship venue. This was the first of five Amateur Championships won by Bonallack.
