“The golf course was spectacular. Nairn is a special place and the people have been so wonderful.”*
With such a pedigree it is little surprise that so many fine golfers have enjoyed Nairn. A century ago these included Harry Vardon and Horace Hutchinson, twice Amateur Champion. Fifty years on it was the redoubtable Major David Blair, Scottish Champion and Walker Cup player, who gladly extolled Nairn’s virtues. Indeed, since the early 1900s Nairn has seen many Championships be they Amateur or Professional. In the 1960s Nairn was Britain’s first club to instigate Golf Weeks. Henry Cotton, three times Open Champion and later knighted, was the prime draw. Others to participate were another Open Champion in Max Faulkner, Ryder Cup captain Dai Rees, Kent’s Sam King and Belgium’s Flory van Donck. Since then other notable occasions have been the British Boys championship in 1989, the Ladies Vagliano Trophy in 1991, and the British Amateur championship in 1994. In 1996 sixteen nations competed for the European Lady Juniors team event, when Spain triumphed over France. Best of all – in 1999 a gallery of some 10,000 witnessed the historic Walker Cup match when Great Britain and Ireland ran away on the second day to beat an excellent American team by 15 - 9. Major events in store include the Amateur Strokeplay European Championship and Ladies British Open Amateur Strokeplay.
