America’s leading Senior golfers will be bidding to maintain their stranglehold over The Seniors Amateur Championship when it is staged for the first time at Ganton on August 6-8, 2014.

Last year George Zahringer, a 60 year-old from New York, emerged victorious to become the fourth successive American Champion and to extend a remarkable sequence that has seen the trophy won by an American player in 13 out of the last 18 years.

Ganton is widely regarded as one of GB&I’s finest tests of golf and in the past it has staged The Amateur Championship, the British Ladies Championship, the Ryder Cup, the Walker Cup, the Curtis Cup, the Jacques Leglise Trophy as well as numerous English national Championships.

George Zahringer won his first international title when he closed with a 74 to claim a one shot victory over fellow American, Tom Brandes, at Royal Aberdeen. The 2002 US Mid-Amateur champion will look forward to defending his title having reached the quarter finals of the 1991 Amateur Championship at Ganton and then played on the American Walker Cup team over the same course two years later.

Format

144 competitors play 36 holes on the Wednesday and Thursday, after which the leading 60 players and ties play a further 18 holes on the Friday.
